The Labour Party's National Executive Council (NEC) has taken a decisive step in addressing what it describes as "anti-party activities" by Abia State Governor, Alex Otti. A disciplinary committee, chaired by Dr. Ayo Olorunfemi, has been set up to investigate Otti's actions and submit a report within two weeks.

NEC Resolutions: A Show of Unity and Direction

The NEC meeting, held on May 2, 2025, at the LP National Headquarters, revealed several key resolutions that underscore the party's commitment to its constitution and leadership.

These include:

- Validity of the 2024 National Convention: The NEC confirmed the legitimacy of the convention and its outcome, demonstrating the party's adherence to its democratic processes.

- Support for the National Working Committee (NWC): Led by Barrister Julius Abure, the NWC has the NEC's full backing, signaling a united front in the party's leadership.

- Peace and Reconciliation: The party expressed its commitment to seeking peace and reconciliation within its ranks, extending an olive branch to aggrieved members.

- No Coalition for 2027: The Labour Party declared its intention to go solo in the 2027 General Election, focusing on rebuilding, repositioning, and expanding its membership base.

The Disciplinary Committee: What's at Stake ?

The committee's investigation will determine whether Governor Otti has indeed engaged in anti-party activities, which could have significant implications for his political future. Otti's recent public remarks on national television, deemed disparaging to the LP, are likely to be a key focus of the investigation.

Implications:

A Test of Party Loyalty:

This development highlights the Labour Party's efforts to maintain internal discipline and uphold its constitution.

The outcome of the disciplinary committee's investigation will likely have far-reaching consequences for Governor Otti and the party's dynamics.

Will the party's leadership emerge stronger, or will this crisis expose deeper divisions ?

Only time will tell.

And in a separate development, the Labour Party led by it's national chairman Barrister Julius Abure congratulated Chief George Moghalu on his emergence as the party's candidate for the 2025 Anambra State Governorship Election.

The NEC rallied all members and Ndi Anambra to support Moghalu in the November 8 election.

As the Labour Party navigates this internal challenge, the fate of Governor Alex Otti and the party's future hang in the balance until the disciplinary committee submits its investigation and report on the possible decision to be taken by the party.

Definitely the outcome of this disciplinary action by the party will surely provide an emergency opportunity making it stronger, or will this crisis lead to further fragmentation ?

The outcome of the disciplinary committee's investigation will be crucial in determining the party's trajectory moving forward for the good of all it's members and the people of Nigeria.
